Character Ed Kickoff - Ms. Canada International Visits OPS On Friday, October 5th Oyen Public School had their Character Ed. kickoff and did it in style. Students gathered in the gymnasium for a special assembly led by Ms. Alesia Fieldberg. Alesia is an entertaining and eloquent speaker who easily held the attention of the OPS students as she discussed the 7 virtues and explained how good character was imperative to getting her where she is today. OPS thanks Ms. Fieldberg for taking time to speak at our school, and wish her a very successful year as Ms. Canada International.
Fairy Tale Ball
Aug 24
Fairy Tale Ball - OPS Book Club finished a very successful year with our first annual Fairy Tale Ball. The dance floor was full of princesses, fairies and many other noble fairy tale characters. There was a moment of fear when Snow White’s evil step mother arrived with her basket of apples. Not wanting the evening to be ruined our fearless heroes Puss in Boots and Robin Hood were there to save the Ball. It was a fabulous night of dancing and fun and Cinderella did make it home before the strike of midnight. Thank you to the OPS Fundraising Society for sponsoring our ball. OPS Elementary Book Club was started last year as an extra curricular activity for grades 1 – 3. This year it was expanded to include the grades 4 -6 as well. We were honestly surprised by the response we received from the students and overjoyed at the interest they are showing in books. The planning for next year has already started; most activities will be for the entire group. The lunch hour book discussions for the grades 4-6 will also continue. We would like to hear suggestions for activities and book selections from both the parents and the students your input is truly valued to make this program work.
Jump Rope for Heart
Aug 24
Jump Rope for Heart - The entire student body of Oyen Public School, along with staff and volunteers participated in the Heart and Stroke “Jump Rope for Heart” event. Over 190 people took part in the afternoon events which included: shooting hoops, single skipping, double-dutch, big group rope jumping, Frisbee, hopscotch, and soccer. With outstanding participation from the students and support from the community we raised over $6400 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Thank you to our event coordinators Joanne MacQuarrie, Sharon Berg and Gary Meekins. We could not have had a successful day without the help of volunteers which included: Deb Pearen, Laurel Martin, Kristie Snell, Erin Logan, and Sheila Woods. The staff did a terrific job of leading groups through their stations and counting pledges. Thank you to all the students who did an awesome job of collecting pledges, shooting hoops and jumping rope.
